Frederick Hart (CC 1983–1999) was an unapologetic classicist

[COSMOS 2000 cover]The photograph on the cover of COSMOS 2000 is of an acrylic sculpture by Frederick Hart, a celebrated artist and Cosmos Club member who died on August 13, 1999. Most members are familiar with this piece, entitled simply “Herself,” which was donated by Mr. Hart and resides in the foyer at the west entrance to the Club.

This work explores the duality of femininity, and reflects Rick Hart’s fascination with the classic ideal of physical feminine beauty wrapped in romantic mystery (note the classic profile and the unbound hair). He was in awe of the power of woman, here represented by androgynous inner images, and created this sculpture to allow two sides of the inner image to be seen through the flowing hair. The positive side, particularly clear from the angle shown in the photograph, can be interpreted as representing the force of a woman’s dreams and aspirations... her innermost feelings. The negative side, not visible in this photograph, may represent the source of feminine energy, the female role literally in bringing forth life, which may be interpreted as an expression of the ultimate source of all energy. There are many ways, of course, to look at the piece, which might well be seen as a woman maturing, not just physically, but deepening in understanding and wisdom.

Mr. Hart was extraordinarily well known worldwide for his work representing a revitalization of mystery, beauty, and a sense of moral purpose in art. The artist who began his career as an apprentice stone carver at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, progressed from carving gothic gargoyles to introducing innovative techniques in sculpture both “woven into the 20th century culture,” according to Art and Antiques (October 1999), and still firmly founded in the great tradition of figurative art.

Rick Hart once wrote that “Art should embrace things of vital human concern...that can stand as icons for future generations” and believed that “...Truth in a work of art [is] in the splendid power of [it] to move us, to reach out and strike [the] heart.” The lasting gift of “Herself” will bring pride and continuing enjoyment to Club members and visitors.
